Roma Part 6

“Porta del Popolo,” is the next important monument in Piazza del Popolo that I want to talk about in my blog. This porta or gate was built in the 3rd century under the reign of Emperor Aurelian, it was the exit of ancient Rome to the North and it became also the starting point of the Via Flaminia, hence it is also called “Porta Flaminia”. The gate was left abandoned with no maintenance for a long time and parts of it were lost or destroyed. It was until the Jubilee year of 1475 that Pope Sixtus IV decided to restore it. The restoration of exterior façade (North side) of the gate was first commissioned to Michelangelo, who proposed [...]

Roma, Part 5

Continuing in my tour in the Piazza del Popolo, in this blog I’ll speak about the churches around this piazza. The Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, is the oldest of the three churches It is located at the north-East part of the Piazza, next to the Porta del Popolo gate. This beautiful church is one of the Minor Basilicas in Rome, its origins began with the construction of a small chapel built in the 10th century at the expense of the Roman people (that is why it takes its name). Legends of ancient Rome, say that the church was built in the site of the tomb of the emperor Nero; many [...]

Rome, Part Four

Going back to Via del Corso and a few meters from the intersection with Via dei Condotti, one can admire the magnificent “Basilica dei Santi Ambrogio e Carlo al Corso” (St. Ambrose and Charles of the Corso). This Basilica is one of the Minor Basilicas of Rome and it stands out in this commercial and busy street because it sits a few meters back from via del Corso, in an angle that creates a small piazza or atrium in front of it. The building history of this church and in particular its façade is remarkable because it had multiple architects and design proposals over the course of its construction: It started under [...]

Rome, Part Three

Continuing walking north in the direction of the Piazza del Popolo, one cannot resist turning to the right at Via dei Condotti and look at this busy and fashionable street of Rome. This famous Via has been part of the history of the city, with interesting historical aspects such as its name; originally it was called TRIDENTE for being the junction point between Via del Corso and Piazza di Spagna. With the beginning of the” Modern Era of Rome” in the 15th -century, the old Via changes its name due to the expansion of the Acqua Vergine aqueduct and was called Via Condotta (the Conduct Street), later changed to Via Condotti. In the 18th -century the northern part [...]

Largo Di Torre Argentina

When I started working on this blog, I did it based on my travel records which area a few years old; however, I have the opportunity to visit Rome again recently and discovered that a few things have changed. One of those is the Largo Di Torre Argentina site. As explained in my first blog, this is a large open archaeological site with some column remains of a Roman temple that can be appreciated from the street level. The site is located next to one of the busiest roads in the city center (Corso Vittorio Emanuele II) and it was discovered by chance during the construction on of a new building in [...]

Rome, Part Two

In my first ARCHIVlog I gave you a brief tour of ancient Rome, listing my favorite monuments. In this second part, I want to tour the modern city; to do this, I will have to take Via del Corso, the main street in the city center, which cuts through the length of the city from the Piazza Venezia in the south to the piazza del Popolo in the north. This important “via,” originally called via Lata, was a main street in ancient Rome, built around 220 BC, was composed of four triumphant arches, and important buildings of ancient Rome. As the city grew, it was extended northward along this road. Around the year 1466 the name was [...]
